Ubuntu convergence tablet at MWC 2016

After all the excitement of Ubuntu phones finally being launched last year, it was recently confirmed on [OMGUbuntu.co.uk](http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/01/bq-confirms-ubuntu-tablet-with-convergence-is-coming) that an Ubuntu tablet, featuring convergence, will be demoed at MWC 2016. This tablet will be based on the BQ Aquaris M10 tablet that currently runs Android. However, with Ubuntu as it’s new operating system, it will not only work as a normal touch-based tablet, but will also have a proper desktop mode when a keyboard and mouse is connected to it.

Here’s a video showing Ubuntu convergence in action:

Convergence mode was a huge feature that was announced ages ago and demoed via a few videos. It was always expected to have been released on an Ubuntu smartphone. Separate dock was then supposed to have been used to provide connectivity to a larger display, mouse and keyboard to allow proper use of it’s desktop mode. Since then, Ubuntu convergence has only been shown on a tablet and the demo at MWC 2016 should show the tablet change it’s UI to quickly move between desktop and tablet mode just by connecting a  Bluetooth keyboard or mouse thereby negating the need for a separate dock.

The big issue about convergence is “Is it really needed?”

Hopefully MWC 2016 will go some way towards answering this question and maybe the new Ubuntu tablet will usher in a new age of convergence devices.

Ubuntu hardware in 2015

Ubuntu has always been about software, specifically operating systems for desktop and server use. There’s been the odd laptop or desktop that popped up with Ubuntu pre-installed but that’s generally been a once-off exercise by an OEM.

2015 however has so far been a really spectacular year for Ubuntu hardware. Ubuntu is now available on, desktops, laptops and phones. It’s not available in all countries and across as wide a range of hardware as it’s Windows counterparts but the list of Ubuntu hardware is growing.

Ubuntu 15.10 “Wily Werewolf” announced

Ubuntu Logo

Mark Shuttleworth recently announced on his blog that Ubuntu 15.10 will be codenamed “Wily Werewolf”.

This is quite a fitting name since this is the version of Ubuntu that will finally bring the much talked about convergence in personal computing. He mentioned in a recent keynote that a phone will be released this year that will give users a pocket PC experience. He also confirmed that WhatsApp will become available on Ubuntu Touch.

This is great news for Ubuntu Touch and should finally realise some of the potential of the Ubuntu Edge device that was announced in 2013.

The shape changing Wily Werewolf is less than 6 months away. Until then, we will have to watch Mark’s keynote video and wait for a beta release. Stay tuned as more info becomes available over the next few months.
