In 2012, Dell released the XPS 13 Developer Edition. This machine was pre-loaded with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and was probably the best ultrabook available with Ubuntu.
Leap forward to 2015 and Dell has once again released a new XPS 13 pre-loaded with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. This new version has a 13″ display but is amazingly smaller overall than a MacBook Air 13″. This is mainly due to it’s “Infinity Display” that is near edge-to-edge which results in a much smaller bezel than the MacBook Air.
The baseline version is priced at $949 and has the following specifications:
- 5th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-5200U Processor (3M Cache, up to 2.70 GHz)
- Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
- 13.3-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) infinity display
- 8GB Dual Channel DDR3L at 1600MHz
- 128GB Solid State Drive
- Intel (R) HD Graphics 5500
- 2.8 lbs (1.27 kg)
Higher end models have faster CPU’s, larger capacity SSD’s and a higher resolution 3200×1800 display. The materials used in it’s construction are not the usual plastic: Gorilla Glass is used to cover the display and carbon fibre and aluminium for the chassis.
The bad news is that there’s no sign of Dell releasing this awesome machine in South Africa. Dell did not release the previous version in South Africa and seem likely to do the same with this version.
