Whatsapp on Ubuntu Desktop

The popular messaging client Whatsapp has recently released a web application that allows a registered Whatsapp user to send and receive Whatsapp messages directly from their computer via the Whatsapp application on their phone. The only prerequisites are a phone with Whatsapp and a computer with Google Chrome. NOTE: The Whatsapp webapp is only supported on Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone. iOS is not supported at this time.

To install Chrome, click here and then click the “Download Chrome” button,

choose either the 32bit or 64bit version that’s appropriate for your version of Ubuntu

and then click on the “Accept and Install” button. A download window will popup asking if you want to save or open the file. Just make sure that the option to open with software center is selected and then click “Ok”. Google Chrome will be downloaded and opened by Ubuntu Software Center. Install as per normal.

Once Chrome is installed and setup, visit web.whatsapp.com and you’ll see a QR code appear.

Then open Whatsapp on your phone, go to settings, select “WhatsApp Web”, scan the code with your phone and bam! Whatsapp is now on your Ubuntu desktop.
